  1. Acute disease caused by the toxin of the
  2. bacillus Clostridium tetani, which usually
  3. enters the body through a wound. The
  4. bacterium is chiefly found in richly manured
  5. soil. Untreated, in seven to ten days tetanus
  6. produces muscular spasm and rigidity of the
  7. jaw spreading to the other muscles,
  8. convulsions, and death. There is a preventive
  9. vaccine series, and the disease may be
  10. treatable with tetanus antitoxin and
  11. antibiotics.
